Marche is often overlooked by tourists as there is no reason to pass through when travelling between major cities, a shame as Marche has some of the friendliest inhabitants of all of Italy. It is almost cut off from the rest of Italy by the Apeninnes (31% of the region is mountains and another 69% is hills). Cities to visit include Urbino, Ascoli Piceno and the capital of the region Ancona from where you can see the sun rise and set as its on an elbow of land that juts into the sea; the name Ancona comes from the Ancient Greek word for elbow.
Perhaps the Verdicchio wine is the most well known product of the region; its easily recognised amphora-shaped bottle with a scroll attached to its neck holds a wine whose low price does not reflect its high quality.
