Lombardia

The name derives from the Longobards, the German tribe who left nothing behind except their name and maybe the iron crown of their king.  Here we are in the third richest province in Europe, the heart of the fashion industry, most newspapers are based here, there is industry but the region is also the ‘White Belt’ of Italy where rice is produced in huge quantities.  After the Emperoa Fredrick I Babarossa destroyed the city in 1154 the milanese rebuilt the city but more importantly constructed an ambitious waterway, drainage and irrigation system.  This led to plentiful supplies of top quality cream, butter, mascapone, honey, vegetables and fruit reaching the city.  Cheese is still one of products in which Lombardia excells.
