Abruzzo has the highest percentage of land dedicated to national parks of any Italian region.  Most importantly Parco Nationale dell’Abruzzo, which is a reserve full of bears, wolves, eagles (aquilia means eagle in Italian, giving the name to the name of the region’s capital) chamois and otters.  This region has tradionalally been interested in the environment and many farmers refuse to use chemicals in agriculture in the belief that this will damage flora and fauna.
